Advancing Research Methods and Methodologies: Connecting Technology, Tradition, and Inclusivity Across Disciplines Towards the Future

The conference invited a broad spectrum of participants, including established scholars, early-career researchers, and postgraduate students from the fields of Social Sciences, Arts, and Humanities. The theme for this year, “Advancing Research Methods and Methodologies: Connecting Technology, Tradition, and Inclusivity Across Disciplines Towards the Future,” reflected our commitment to fostering a multidisciplinary dialogue that spans the gamut of research approaches. To further enhance accessibility and inclusivity, RMC 2024 has been hosted online for the first time, allowing participants from across the globe to engage without the barriers of physical distance.

We strive to foster a supportive atmosphere that promotes meaningful engagement and constructive dialogue, empowering participants to contribute substantially to the conversation on how ongoing and future developments in research methodology can address urgent global challenges, including but not limited to environmental sustainability and climate change through diverse methods and methodologies. In doing so, we recognise the revolutionary impact of artificial intelligence (AI) and big data in research, while we also underscore the importance of adopting inclusive and diverse research practices.

Acknowledging the profound influence of recent advancements in AI and big data analytics on research, the conference also highlights how methodological futures need to be in continuity with the past and embedded in community, highlighting the invaluable role of indigenous knowledge, participatory research, and interdisciplinary approaches in developing sustainable solutions. These varied methods and methodologies offer a holistic view of environmental complexities and pave the way for future innovative strategies geared toward resilience and sustainability.

We welcomed submissions that:

  • Were no more than 500 words, outlining your study and the methodological aspect(s).
  • Demonstrated innovative ideas and incorporated a broad range of discussions about the future of research methods, including but not limited to AI, big data, indigenous knowledge systems, participatory research, and interdisciplinary studies.
  • Explored the ongoing and future integration of AI and big data in understanding environmental phenomena while valuing the role of traditional and non-technological methods in environmental research and policymaking.
  • Advocated for ethical and sustainable research practices, emphasising the importance of inclusivity in research approaches to address global challenges.
  • Highlighted how future methodologies needed to include collaborative methodologies, community-based research, and local solutions to environmental challenges, fostering dialogue among technologists, environmental scientists, policymakers, and communities.

Key topics included:

  • Innovative Data Analysis Techniques in Environmental Research
  • Ethical, Sustainable, and Participatory Research Practices
  • Integration of Technological and Traditional Methods in Environmental Studies
  • The future of research methodologies
  • Social and Economic Impacts of Climate Change
  • Emerging methodologies
  • Education and Research for Sustainable Development
  • Interdisciplinary and Inclusive Approaches in Climate Change Research
  • Collaborative Methodologies for Global Challenges
  • The Role of Diverse Methodologies in Environmental Policy and Decision Making
  • Advances in Climate Modelling, Forecasting, and Indigenous Knowledge Systems
  • Community-based Research and Local Solutions to Environmental Challenges

Researchers joined us in exploring innovative approaches and strategies crucial in addressing environmental challenges and promoting a sustainable future as we aim to foster a broad, inclusive conversation that unites various methods for global resilience.

The conference has enabled participants to i) share their research experience ii) get feedback from their peers and leading academics and iii) develop their understanding of methods and methodologies in global contexts. The attendees were able to explore the current research trends, empirical, methodological, and ethical issues as well as challenges and opportunities.

I) Conference Proceedings: Presented abstracts from the conference to be invited for full paper submission for the Conference Proceedings.

II) Selected papers that successfully go through a peer-review process to be published in the following journal:

RMC … has been a great conference. I’ve had the chance to meet people working in the very same field that I have invested a great deal of time to. Looking forward to meeting you again next year!

I totally enjoyed the whole programme. It has been nice to attend the RMC … in person after the Covid 19 measures. I learned a lot, both in theory and practice.
